Faculty Guide to Information Literacy

Intended to help faculty align ABHE outcomes with ACRL Framework for Literacy in Higher Education.

ABHE Outcome 1: Exhibit Knowledge

Exhibit knowledge of the Bible and essential Christian doctrine by interpreting Scripture through proper exegetical techniques.

ACRL Framework: Authority is Constructed and Contextual

Define different types of authority, such as subject expertise (e.g., scholarship), societal position (e.g., public office or title), or special experience (e.g., participating in a historic event);

ACRL Framework: Information Creation as a Process

Recognize that information may be perceived differently based on the format in which it is packaged;

MEANS OF ASSESSMENT: ABHE Bible Knowledge Exam / course embedded assessments / capstone projects / internship, practicum, field education evaluations / supervisor or peer surveys of those sitting under graduate's ministry

ABHE Outcome 2: Practice spiritual disciplines

Practice spiritual disciplines necessary for a lifelong and maturing personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

ACRL Framework: Information Creation as a Process

Recognize that information may be perceived differently based on the format in which it is packaged;

ACRL Framework: Research as Inquiry

Organize information in meaningful ways;

Synthesize ideas gathered from multiple sources;

Draw reasonable conclusions based on the analysis and interpretation of information.

MEANS OF ASSESSMENT: Spiritual formation assessment instruments / Journals and Portfolio assignments / Internship, Practicum, Field Education Evaluations / Supervisor or Peer Surveys of those sitting under graduate's ministry

ABHE Outcome 3: Use analytical and research skills

Use analytical and research skills in locating, evaluating, and applying information for life and ministry.

ACRL Framework: Searching as Strategic Exploration

Match information needs and search strategies to appropriate search tools;

Design and refine needs and search strategies as necessary, based on search results;

Use different types of searching language (e.g., controlled vocabulary, keywords, natural language) appropriately;

Manage searching processes and results effectively

MEANS OF ASSESSMENT: Course embedded assignments / Capstone Projects / Portfolio pieces / scores on SAILS, iSkills, or other information literacy instruments / evidence of success in graduate work (theses, dissertations, records of study)

ABHE Outcome 4: Articulate a broad range of knowledge

Articulate a broad range of knowledge in the natural and social sciences, humanities, and the arts as part of a well-rounded Christian life based upon a biblical worldview.

ABHE Outcome 5: Exercise a variety of effective communication skills

Exercise a variety of effective communication skills useful for life and ministry.

ACRL Framework: Scholarship as Conversation

Contribute to scholarly conversation at an appropriate level, such as local online community, guided discussion, undergraduate research journal, conference presentation/poster session;

MEANS OF ASSESSMENT: Course embedded assignments / Capstone Projects / Portfolio pieces / scores on SAILS, iSkills, or other information literacy instruments / evidence of success in graduate work (theses, dissertations, records of study) / supervisor or peer surveys of those sitting under graduate's ministry.

ABHE Outcome 6: Articulate the value of human beings

Articulate the value of human beings as created in God's image and support that belief through Christ-like acts of service.

Contribute to scholarly conversation at an appropriate level, such as local online community, guided discussion, undergraduate research journal, conference presentation/poster session;

ABHE Outcome 7: Articulate essential elements

Articulate the essential elements of the Gospel and the Christian faith in a variety of cultural settings.

Understand how and why some individuals or groups of individuals may be underrepresented or systematically marginalized within the systems that produce and disseminate information;

MEANS OF ASSESSMENT: Evaluation of cross-cultural Internship / capstone or other cross-cultural project / journal or portfolio assignments.

ABHE Outcome 8: Employ leadership

Employ leadership and other relational skills that reflect a biblical worldview in a chosen field of service or vocation.

Determine the initial scope of the task required to meet their information needs;

Utilize divergent (e.g., brainstorming) and convergent (e.g., selecting the best source) thinking when searching;
